Nokia announced a strategic partnership with iSAT Africa to enhance rural connectivity in Liberia, aiming to bridge the digital divide and bring reliable and affordable network access to underserved communities. This deployment will span over three years and cover approximately 200 sites across rural areas in Liberia.

Nokia announced that it is further strengthening its partnership with Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC) by building a 5G mobile core network. This is an extension of the existing agreement where Nokia is a strategic technology partner that will build Ghana’s first 5G network. As a shared neutral host network, NGIC will use the 5G network to offer wholesale services to mobile service providers in the country, which will be able to deliver 5G services to their subscribers - for faster data speeds and stronger network reliability and capacity.

Due to the ongoing market weakness, Nokia reported a 19% year-on-year constant currency decline in net sales in the first quarter of 2024. Within a challenging environment, order trends continue to improve year-on-year, particularly in the Network Infrastructure business unit.

According to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report, global 5G subscriptions are projected to reach 5.6 billion by the end of 2029, with 5G population coverage outside mainland China doubling from 40 percent in 2023 to 80 percent in 2029. The report highlights a surge in 5G adoption, with 160 million new subscriptions in the first quarter of 2024, totaling 1.7 billion. Nearly 600 million new subscriptions are anticipated this year. By 2029, 5G is expected to account for 60% of all mobile subscriptions, becoming the dominant mobile access technology by 2028.
