Uganda will launch its first satellite into low Earth orbit in September 2022. Matia Kasaija, Uganda's minister of finance, planning and economic development, said the launch will be in collaboration with NASA.

Kasaija made this statement while reading the country’s budget speech at Kololo Independence Grounds and said, “In September this year, Uganda will launch into the Lower Earth Orbit its first-ever satellite from the International Space Station in collaboration with the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).”

He added that the PearlAfricaSat-1 satellite will transmit data to a ground station in Mpoma, Mukono, which will be used for various purposes, including meteorology, environmental monitoring, urban planning, mineral exploration, and disaster management.

Kasaija commented on the amount allocated for advancing innovation and technological development in Uganda, stating, “I have allocated Shs 274.4 billion towards advancing innovation and technological development in the country.”
