With the launch of its 4G+ network, Tigo, subsidiary of Millicom International Cellular (MIC), aims to outpace leading telecom operator in Tanzania Vodacom.

Tigo’s 4G+ network offers an ultra-fast digital experience that addresses the needs of consumers, according to Jerome Albou, CTO of Tigo Tanzania. In addition, Tarif Boudiaf, CCO of the company, added that subscribers can have access to an improved quality of services.

However, the network is only available in 5 cities so far: Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Morogoro, Moshi and Dodoma, but will reach progressively 22 other cities that already have 4G coverage.

Tigo aims to increase its subscribers’ base in order to overcome Vodacom and be the leader of the local telecom market. According to statistics provided by Tanzania’s Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), Vodacom has 12 689 666 clients accounting for a market share of 32%. Tigo is next with 11 460 964 clients accounting for a market share of 29%.

As for the other operators in the market, Airtel comes third with 11 005 202 subscribers accounting for a market share of 27%, Viettel’s Halotel holds a market share of 9% with 3 513 927 subscribers, whereas Zantel precedes TTCL and Smart with 1 047 248 subscribers.
