At the launch of Safaricom's 5G network, Joe Mucheru, Kenya's Minister of Information and Communication Technology, renewed his government's position in support of Chinese technology group Huawei.

Kenya maintains its confidence in Huawei despite the US government's technology war since May 2019.

"As a government, we are aware of the vendor and technology issues, but some of them are more about politics than technology. We are using the services and as a government we have been able to verify that the services are secure," said Joe Mucheru.

In Africa, where Huawei is a major contributor to the development of high-speed telecom networks, the positions of several countries have always remained unclear. Only South Africa and Kenya had said in 2019 that they would continue to work with Huawei to develop telecom infrastructure that will support their digital transformation.

Joe Mucheru's statements on Huawei and 5G are aimed at further reassuring Kenyan consumers about the quality and integrity of the telecommunications services that will be provided to them through the Chinese group's technology.
