Nokia is helping Ooredoo Algeria take the first step towards next generation networks and reinforce its technology leadership in the region with the successful deployment of North Africa's first virtualized Mobile Gateway. This is a crucial step for the migration of core network elements to the cloud and paves the way for the transformation of the core network to support next generation mobile network technology. The deployment allows Ooredoo Algeria to meet growing data demand in the region, and provide new and innovative services like Internet of Things (IoT), in addition to enhanced broadband to its subscribers. Once deployed, Ooredoo Algeria's subscribers will be able to enjoy high bandwidth-consuming services, delivering the best possible performance and reliability.

Leading pan-African telecoms group Liquid Telecom will implement and operate South Sudan’s first fiber broadband network, connecting the country to the “One Africa” broadband network, which is approaching 70,000km across 13 African countries and to the rest of the world. This breakthrough foreign direct investment by Liquid Telecom has been recognized by His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan. Ministers along with other national VIPs are joining senior executives from Liquid Telecom during a symbolic fiber digging inauguration.

The Moroccan government has initiated a privatization process by announcing that it will sell its 8% stake in Maroc Telecom and relinquishing its right to vote. The government announced that it will 6% of that stake this month as a block order to local institutional investors such as retirement funds, insurance companies and banks. The remaining 2% stake will be sold on the Casablanca stock exchange, where the company is already listed, said the Ministry of Finance.

Telecom Egypt Egypt’s first integrated telecom operator, and Juniper Networks, a leader in secure, AI-driven networks, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Cairo further cementing Juniper’s position as a strategic technology provider for Telecom Egypt. This MoU will highlight the companies’ intent to scope the Egyptian business landscape for shared opportunities to provide IP-based, high-performance networking solutions to enterprises. Telecom Egypt will also have the option to become an authorized resale partner of Juniper’s technology solutions in Egypt.

According to Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, the company along with its largest shareholder Vodacom are set to form a joint venture to buy rights to m-Pesa service from Vodafone Group in a deal worth $13 million.
