Nigeria's decision to order South African telecoms giant MTN to repay billions of dollars that it had allegedly illegally repatriated over a period of eight years could sour investor sentiment towards the country as it still struggles to recover from a deep recession two years ago, analysts say.

Telecom Egypt and Etisalat Misr have formally announced they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide the latter with virtual fixed voice services. The agreement, which represents the first of its kind in the Egyptian market, covers all the basic terms that shall allow both companies to formalize a commercial agreement in due course. Under this MoU, Telecom Egypt through its nationwide fixed network will enable Etisalat Misr to provide its customers with fixed voice services.

Telecom Egypt published its Q2 2018 results driven by its strong operational performance. Consolidated revenue crossed EGP 10bn for the first time increasing 16% year-on-year as data services that increased by 45% year-on-year, continue to lead growth boosted by fixed broadband.

Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecom services provider, and Telecom Egypt, Egypt’s first integrated telecom operator, announced a strategic partnership, wherein, Airtel will get IRUs (Indefeasible Right of Use) on Middle East North Africa Submarine Cable (MENA Cable) and TE North Cable Systems. In addition, Airtel will also take large capacities on a long-term basis on two new state-of-the-art Cable Systems (SMW5 & AAE1). The transactions aim to be concluded after the fulfillment of all conditions precedents.

Liquid Telecom Kenya, part of the leading pan-African telecoms group Liquid Telecom, has announced a partnership with Sigfox, the world's leading Internet of Things (IoT) services provider, to build and deploy a nationwide IoT network covering up to 85% of the Kenyan population. The new base stations will be connected to Liquid Telecom's fiber network, to deliver guaranteed reliability and speed.

Teleology Holdings, chosen on February 2018 to acquire 9mobile, was initially given until July 25th to pay 251 million dollars and finalize the acquisition operation after it as already paid a non-reimbursable deposit of 50 million dollars last March. However, the deadline was extended because the company hadn’t received yet the legal approval of Nigeria’s Communications Commission (NCC) and other authorities.

It is a conventional thing in Nigeria to sell telecom frequencies between operators. But today, there is no need to wait for an auction organized by the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) to fulfill the need of technical resources, confirmed Olusola Teniola, president of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON). However he refrained from revealing the current transactions given the highly strategic nature of the latter.

Leading pan-African telecoms group, Liquid Telecom, and Telecom Egypt, Egypt's first integrated telecom operator, announced at the 2018 Annual Meetings of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will enable Liquid Telecom to shortly complete Africa's terrestrial fiber network stretching all the way from Cape Town, South Africa, to Cairo, Egypt.
