After three years of implementing remote and hybrid work due to the COVID-19 pandemic, work managers have experienced a shift in their perspective on this policy across different industries. While many employees still prefer the flexibility of working from home, some companies are now advocating for a return to in-person office work.

Notably, tech giants such as Google, Snap, Microsoft, Apple and Twitter have begun implementing stricter measures against employees who continue remote work, except in special circumstances requiring Elon Musk's personal approval.

Some human resources officials believe that working from the office enhances employees' sense of belonging and connection to the company. In addition, productivity is seen to improve, resulting in a significant positive impact. Recent statistics indicate that employees working in the office are more likely to seek advancement compared to those adopting hybrid work, as remote work can limit career aspirations and hinder personal development.

Furthermore, one in nine employers acknowledges the potential drawbacks of remote work, such as decreased working hours and wages. This contributes to their desire to return to an in-office work policy, as organizing work internally becomes more challenging with hybrid arrangements. While the global health crisis necessitated widespread digital work, companies are now focused on reinstating previous rules, as working from the office offers numerous benefits for individuals, companies and society as a whole.

A survey reveals that 92% of company managers prefer office-based work. However, it is important to provide training on adopting hybrid work in exceptional cases, as direct interaction and easier communication with employees from the office remain crucial considerations. Approximately 13% of current job vacancies are classified as hybrid positions. Following the pandemic, which compelled millions of employees to transition to new styles of work, institutions and companies are striving to strike a balance between virtual and hybrid work to adapt to the changing landscape while maintaining employee presence.

Moreover, another factor influencing the shift back to in-person office work is the importance of collaboration and creativity in certain industries. While remote work offers convenience, face-to-face interactions foster a sense of camaraderie and enable spontaneous brainstorming sessions that can drive innovation. Companies in fields such as design, advertising and research and development are particularly keen on re-establishing the office environment to cultivate a vibrant and collaborative atmosphere.

Experts emphasize the importance of understanding people's behavior in this new era and recognizing the design, structural and production requirements associated with remote work. Remote work conditions may not be compatible with all companies, particularly those heavily reliant on physical labor, deliveries and direct communication, prompting a return to traditional office hours.

However, technology companies, along with other industries, leverage local talent to drive office productivity. In contrast to the strategies employed in 2020, today's technology giants are encouraging employees to return to offices and embrace the prevailing culture of urban work in the "productive" labor market. In 2022, the percentage of remote workers did not exceed 22% after reaching 41% in 2021.

Although remote work rates have declined worldwide as life returns to normal, this new paradigm is likely to remain a suitable pattern for many sectors in the years ahead. Nevertheless, certain businesses may find greater benefits in maintaining a physical work environment. For these, collaboration will remain a fundamental part of their productivity.
