The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) and the Namibia Revenue Authority (NAMRA) signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen control measures on the entry of ICT and telecom equipment into the country. The initiative aims to protect the national telecom market and consumers against counterfeit products.

This collaboration is in line with the provisions of Section 80 of the Namibian Communications Act as well as the type approval regulations for the importation of telecommunications equipment into Namibia. CRAN had already signed a similar agreement with the Ministry of Finance in 2016. The following year, it launched a major campaign to combat the entry of unapproved telecom equipment into the Namibian telecom market.

CRAN and NAMRA also plan to collaborate on research and capacity-building initiatives aimed at facilitating the legal and efficient importation of telecommunications equipment and international ordinary mail. They, therefore, recommend that importers, vendors, patent holders and manufacturers of telecommunications equipment obtain a type of approval certificate before importing goods.
