An electronic payment wage system won the 2022 MTN MoMo Hackathon award. The “E- wage payment system APP” is a web-based application that facilitates single payments for casual workers via their mobile phones. The two student developers were awarded $5000 for putting their idea into action. In total, twelve teams pitched their ideas for the competition in September 2022.

This system works by having businesses that are interested in using the services simply register their accounts and then create payslips for their casual workers. That payment form will then immediately connect to the MoMo API, allowing the payment to be completed.

Akuayo said the development of the app came out of his experience as a casual worker who spent most of his time standing in line every day to get paid.

After some initial promise as a project in his school, Akuayo paused for a while to make improvements. Before completing the system, he and his co-developer had the chance to submit the app idea to the MTM MoMo Hackathon Challenge.

Launched in 2018, the MTN MoMo API Hackathon enables Ugandan developers to add functionality beyond payment processing, accelerate financial inclusion, digitize payments and build apps that can process financial transactions.

This initiative is supported by the MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) API platform.
