Ride-hailing app Uber has recently introduced M-PESA payments on its platform, allowing riders to pay for their cab fare using Safaricom's mobile money service. This addition comes shortly after Uber Eats also introduced the same payment feature. The timing of this new service is welcomed, as customers have long been frustrated by the absence of this payment option.

Before the M-PESA integration, riders had to request the driver's M-PESA number and send the cab fare directly to them without involving Uber. While this method worked for some, it created complications as drivers had to remit their commission to Uber separately.

Kui Mbugua, the general manager of UberEats in Kenya, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Safaricom. The integration aims to improve the experience for delivery personnel and customers on their platform by facilitating easy access to earnings and providing a convenient mode of payment for deliveries.

The benefits of the integration of M-PESA extend beyond settling cab fees. Now, drivers can receive their disbursements through M-PESA if they prefer, whereas previously, disbursements were limited to bank accounts only. This option is particularly useful for drivers without bank accounts, while those with bank accounts can also choose M-PESA to avoid transaction charges when transferring their disbursements from the bank to mobile money wallets.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa emphasized the significance of this partnership with Uber, as it enables thousands of drivers and delivery people, along with millions of customers, to benefit from a fully digital solution for faster and more secure, affordable and convenient payments through M-PESA. The collaboration reflects Safaricom's commitment to providing value and opportunities to customers in line with their mission to transform lives.

Regarding privacy and safety, Uber's recording feature for rides is implemented anonymously. The resulting audio files are stored locally on the device and encrypted. Neither the driver nor the rider can listen to the recordings, but if a safety issue arises, the recording can be uploaded to Uber for investigation. The recordings are automatically deleted after seven days if no safety issue has been reported.
