Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC announced that Anwar Soussa, the executive officer of the company, will be leaving the business effective July 31, 2023, as his secondment comes to an end.

Soussa joined Safaricom Ethiopia in August 2021, taking on the role of CEO to lead the establishment of the organization, set up business operations and oversee the rollout of a high-quality network.

During his tenure as the first CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, Anwar Soussa has achieved significant milestones in a highly dynamic environment. He successfully onboarded the team and played a pivotal role in launching the commercial operations of the second telecommunications operator in Ethiopia. Under his leadership, Safaricom Ethiopia acquired over 4 million customers, expanding its network coverage to more than 25% of the population and reaching 50 cities and towns across the country.

One of the notable accomplishments during Anwar Soussa's time as CEO was securing a mobile financial services license, which opened the pathway for the highly anticipated launch of M-PESA services in Ethiopia. This development marked a major step forward in providing convenient and accessible financial services to the Ethiopian population.
