It has been reported that the merger of Airtel Kenya and Telkom Kenya will face a delay of up to 4 months awaiting the tribunal’s verdict on their protest against the conditions placed on their proposed tie-up. Back in January 10, they filed an application with the Competition Tribunal to ignore most of the post-merger conditions set by the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK).

“Following information circulating online and on social media regarding CEO Nikolai Beckers, Ooredoo Algeria abstains from providing any comments. For now, Ooredoo Algeria is gathering all the relevant information.” That was the declaration made by the Algerian operator in an official press release.

Kenyan operator Safaricom has opened talks with undisclosed investors to form a consortium that will this year bid for one of two Ethiopian telecoms licences, reports Business Daily. However, the cost to break up the current monopoly will not be cheap. A consortium is needed because of the high entry costs that are likely to exceed KES 100 billion $1 billion) mark. The Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed firm said it was racing to assemble the group of investors ahead of its Ethiopian bid, which is expected in April.

South African mobile giant MTN has said it will make investments worth $1.6 billion in Nigeria as it seeks to put a series of legal wrangles to bed. The telecommunications firm said that its top executives made the announcement during a meeting with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

Vodacom South Africa is expected to bring 5G to the continent in 2020. While waiting for the new spectrum to be issued, the operator is putting on the market new roaming deals in collaboration with Rain and Liquid Telecom to help expand 4G capacity and launch 5G services.
